Experts assess China's prospects as it undertakes grand reforms amid Asia's crisis
CHINA'S PRECARIOUS STABILITY AMID Asia's financial storms has put the country under the international spotlight. Can the new government of Premier Zhu Rongji successfully overhaul the troubled state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and creaky financial system? Will slower growth and job losses trigger social explosions? With some black-market quotes on the yuan up to 10% weaker than the official rate of 8.28 to the dollar, can devaluation be avoided? These and other questions were examined by a high-powered gathering of experts at the recent
China Business Summit in Beijing, sponsored by the World Economic Forum. Among them were Fan Gang, director of China's National Economic Research Institute; Hu Angang, research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Laurence Brahm, managing director of the Naga Group, a Beijing-based business consultancy.
