soc.culture.thai's Thailand Resource List 28-May-1994

From: craig@nwg.nectec.or.th (Craig Emmott)

Mr Faq Keeper,

Perhaps SCT FAQ should have a reading or resource list like some other FAQs do. Here's a list of books relating to Thailand. If anyone has read one and thinks it useful, propose it for inclusion in the FAQ reading list. My own suggestion is "Culture Shock - Thailand," a good handbook on Thai ways for those new to Thailand.

HISTORY

BUDDHISM

THAI CULTURE

ART AND HANDICRAFTS

LIVING IN THAILAND

GENERAL INTEREST

CHILDREN'S BOOKS

TRAVEL GUIDES

Re: your excellent list of reference books on Thailand, I offer a couple which I don't think are on there (it's early). I leave the categorization to others:

  1. _The King of Thailand in World Focus_ published by the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (1988), Editor in Chief: Denis A. Gray and worked on by many, many others. A view of His Majesty as seen through foreign correspondents, both writers and photograhers. Available from the FCCT at Room 428, Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok. Also comes with a very well done chart of the Chakri Dynasty. All proceeds from book sales donated to Royal Charities. ISBN: 974-86773-3-8.
  2. _Ramakien, The Thai Ramayana_ published by Naga Books, Bangkok (1993), Text by Patmini Limited 1993, Illustrations by Pramote Na Ranong 1993. This is a Thai version of the Indian epic concerning the "Story of Rama." Given the Indian influence on Thai culture (a fact which is constantly being pointed out to me by people), this book is interesting reading. ISBN: 974-7315-57-2.
There is also another publication by Naga Books: _Tales of Sri Thanonchai, Thailand's Artful Trickster_ which looks good, but which I have not read.

Both these Naga publications are at Asia Books and, I assume, at other book stores in Bangkok.

Keep up the good work on this FAQ.

two more books:

If you don't make distinction between "novel" and "reality", the accounts given by Anna Leonowens in her two books (diaries?):

And a "novel" created by Margaret Landon:

And many others including the one by David Wyatt, something like THAILAND: A SHORT HISTORY, and that compiled by the US State Dept. THAILAND which also includes information about people and culture. Sorry I don't have full bibliography of them here.

From: ssg9328@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (Samart Srijumnong)

I would recommend COOKING THAIFOOD IN AMERICAN KITCHENS, BOOKS 1 & 2, by Malulee Pinsuvana, Bangkok: Thai Watana Panich, Co., 1987. Interested call:

East Coast... Siam Enterprise, 790 9th Ave, New York, NY 10019, tel. (212) 245-4660 (PM) or (201) 967-8025.

West Coast... Bangkok Market, Inc. 5815 Maywood Avenue, Los Angeles. Tel. (213) 585-5385, 585-5386, 585-5387 FAX (213) 583-4633

I remember seeing the price on the books selling around my place at an oriental store is something in the neighbor of $5.00. In any case, find it out yourself.

Another book title for the SCT resources file:

`Studies in Thai History' by David K. Wyatt; Silkworm Books; Chiang Mai, 1994.

I have some to add to the list:

Another book for the resources file:

From: Richp@tiny.demon.co.uk (Richard Phillips)

I've just started a book which I think should be added to the booklist. It's called 'The Autobiography of a Forest Monk - Venerable Ajahn Tate' He was born in 1902 and looks as though he tells a good story :-) Published 1993, ISBN 974-8361-70-5

Don't know where you'd buy it from. Free distribution as a gift of Dhamma. I've borrowed it from the local Wat. The copyright is held by Wat Hin Mark Peng, Sri Chiang Mai, Nongkhai, Thailand 43130.

Another book which I've just started reading:

Traveller's Tales Thailand Published by Traveller's Tales Distributed by O'Reilly and Associates ISBN 1-885211-05-8
